Most Successful Teams in Asia Cup History

The Asia Cup is set to return once again from September 9, 2025, featuring eight teams from across Asia, including cricketing giants India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Interestingly, despite their fierce rivalry and dominance in Asian cricket, India and Pakistan have never faced each other in an Asia Cup final.

The tournament was first launched in 1983 by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and has typically been held every 1 to 2 years. So far, the Asia Cup has been held 16 times, with 14 editions in the ODI format and 2 in the T20 format. The upcoming Asia Cup 2025 edition will be played in the T20 format.

India enters this tournament as the defending champion, having won the 2023 Asia Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in the ODI format. The last T20 edition, held in 2022, was won by Sri Lanka.

1. India (8 Times)

At the top of the list is India, the most successful team in the tournament’s history. India has lifted the Asia Cup eight times—a record that highlights their consistent excellence across different formats and eras. Their first title came in 1984 in the UAE, followed by wins in 1988, 1990-91, 1995, 2010, 2016, 2018, and most recently in 2023. Notably, India’s 2016 victory marked their first Asia Cup title in the T20I format, demonstrating their ability to adapt.

2. Sri Lanka (6 Times)

Coming in second is Sri Lanka, with six Asia Cup titles to their name. They emerged victorious in 1986, 1997, 2004, 2008, 2014, and 2022. Sri Lanka’s performance in the 2022 T20 edition, where they defeated a strong Pakistan side, was a shining example of their resilience and tournament pedigree.

3. Pakistan ( 2 Times)

Pakistan has won the title twice, in 2000 and 2012, both in the ODI format. While they have fewer titles than India and Sri Lanka, Pakistan has always been a formidable force. Their 2012 win, a closely contested final against Bangladesh, remains a cherished memory for fans. Pakistan will undoubtedly be aiming to claim its first T20 Asia Cup title this time.

As for the other teams, Bangladesh and Afghanistan have shown great promise in recent years. Bangladesh, in particular, has been runner-up three times—in 2012, 2016, and 2018—reflecting their growing stature in Asian cricket. Afghanistan has consistently reached the Super Four stage, proving themselves to be tough contenders, though both teams are still chasing their maiden Asia Cup triumph.
