Highest Partnership for the Indian Premier League


The Indian Premier League is considered to be the best T20 league since its origin in the year 2008. In the very first match of the tournament, Brendon McCullum made this league famous all over the world by playing a brilliant innings of 158 runs in just 73 balls for Kolkata Knight Riders against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Even after this, every year, some magical innings have been played in IPL, like Chris Gayle's 175, Quinton de Kock's 140, KL Rahul's 132 runs innings, but these players would not have been able to achieve these achievements if they had not got help from the other side. There have been some pairs in IPL history that are usually known for destroying the bowling line-up of the opposition team. And these pairs have also been known for their record partnerships. Fans always want to see such a pair playing together. In this article, we are going to learn about the biggest partnerships of the Indian Premier League.


1. Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers (229 runs)


In match number 44 of IPL 2016, Royal Challengers Bangalore faced Gujarat Lions at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore. Gujarat Lions captain Brendon McCullum won the toss and decided to field first. In the first 4 overs, Gujarat's bowling attack dominated Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli.  Even in the fourth over of the innings, Gayle was dismissed by Dhawal Kulkarni for just 6 runs. But after this, AB de Villiers played a wonderful innings. He scored 129 runs in just 52 balls, which included 10 fours and 12 sixes. At the same time, Virat Kohli also played a century innings of 109 runs in 55 balls, which included 5 fours and 8 sixes. Both of them shared a partnership of 229 runs in just 96 balls for the second wicket. This is the biggest partnership in the history of the Indian Premier League. In this match, RCB scored 248 runs for the loss of just 3 wickets. In response, Gujarat Lions were all out for just 104 runs. RCB won that match by 144 runs, and this is the second biggest win in IPL history so far. It will be very difficult for any pair to break the record of the 229-run partnership of these two legendary players in the upcoming cricket matches of the IPL. 


2. Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers (215* runs)


The pair of AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli is considered one of the best pairs in IPL history.  They have scored a lot of runs together. In 2015, both of them devastated the MI bowling attack against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In this match, both of them shared an unbeaten partnership of 215 runs in 101 balls for the second wicket. AB de Villiers scored 133 runs in 59 balls, which included 19 fours and 4 sixes, while Virat Kohli scored 82 runs in 50 balls, which included 6 fours and 4 sixes. Thanks to this partnership, RCB posted a huge score of 235 runs for the loss of just one wicket. In response, the Mumbai Indians could only score 196 runs.


3. KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock (210* runs)


In IPL 2022, Lucknow Super Giants faced Kolkata Knight Riders at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. In this match, Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul shared an unbeaten partnership of 210 runs for the first wicket.  They both remained unbeaten till the end of the innings. Quinton de Kock scored 140 runs off 70 balls, which included 10 fours and 10 sixes. KL Rahul scored 68 runs off 51 balls, which included 3 fours and 4 sixes. Chasing 211 runs, KKR fell just 2 runs short of winning the match. They scored 208/8 at the end of the match.


4. Shubman Gill and Sai Sudarshan (210 runs)


During the league match between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2024, which was held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, GT scored 231/3. For Gujarat, captain Shubman Gill and Sai Sudarshan shared an opening wicket partnership of 210 runs off 104 balls. Gill scored 104 runs off 55 balls, which included 9 fours and 6 sixes.  While Sai Sudharsan scored 103 runs off 51 balls, which included 5 fours and 7 sixes. Thanks to this partnership, Gujarat Titans scored 231 runs for the loss of 3 wickets after batting first. In response, CSK could only manage 196/8. This pair will also be seen for the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, and so far, both have done a great job of giving their team a great start.


5. Shaun Marsh and Adam Gilchrist (206 runs)


Shaun Marsh and Adam Gilchrist shared a memorable partnership of 206 runs for Kings XI Punjab against Royal Challengers Bangalore at Dharamsala on May 17, 2011. In this explosive partnership for the second wicket, Gilchrist played a brilliant innings of 106 runs off just 55 balls, while Marsh supported the team by playing a brilliant innings of 79 runs off 49 balls. Their explosive batting led Kings XI Punjab to a strong score of 232/2, eventually leading to a stunning victory of 111 runs. This partnership is one of the greatest partnerships in IPL history and is a testament to the destructive abilities of both batsmen.
